What’s the Average Home Energy Consumption in Your State?

Is your energy consumption on par with other homes in your state? The Energy Information Administration (EIA) tracks a lot of data related to how we use energy in this country. The information is broken down by type of consumer, energy source, and location. 

If you’re curious how your energy use compares to others in your state, take a look at our state-by-state breakdown below. 

National Energy Consumption

Before we take a look at the state-by-state stats, let’s put things in perspective by going over the national numbers and some other insightful statistics. 

According to the EIA, the average U.S. utility customer (household) consumes 10,649 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a year and around 877 kWh per month. Which state uses the most electricity in a year? Not surprisingly, hot and humid Louisiana has the highest per customer use at 14,787 kWh a year. In the more temperate climate of Hawaii, they use the least electricity, just 6,296 kWh per customer annually. 

Total energy use is a totally different story. The most total energy is used in Wyoming, 967 million Btu a year per capita. Just 187 million Btu per capita is used annually in Rhode Island. The national median is approximately 312.5 million Btu a year per capita.

Keep in mind, these are annual averages that change. Overall energy consumption is increasing year-over-year. However, some states have put initiatives into place to curb energy use, which means we could see some states actually decrease gas and electricity use in the near future.
